DVD 1 The Barcelona Concert (running time 79 minutes) was recorded at the Palau de la Música Catalana 4th November 2007. This is Cecilia at her brilliant best, wearing the red dress she wore for one of her Maria Barbican Concerts, London, 19th December 2007. The dress is fittingly sumptuous but of a simple elegant line that fits Cecilia down to the ground, conjuring an ancient Minoan goddess sculpted in pink and red ceramic suddenly made flesh and animated before our very eyes, rejuvenated, radiant with divine energy and yet completely at ease. This concert DVD captures beautifully Cecilia'smore… exuberance and sheer joy in performing, and conveys clearly the intimate atmosphere that pervades the concert hall whenever and wherever she performs.

DVD 2: Malibran Rediscovered - The Romantic Revolution (68 min). This documentary gives a very different compilation from the Maria DVD (30 min) included with the super deluxe limited edition, is much more personally revealing, and includes a sound recording, made by Cecilia's father, of her stage début at the age of eight singing 'Pastorello' in Puccini's Tosca.

Essential viewing for all Bartoli devotees.

Cecilia constructs a programme in much the same way that Shakespeare constructed a play, with high drama contrasted with quiet introspection, sometimes within the same aria, with romance and tragedy and spirituality (INFELICE and ASSISA AL PIE D'UN SALICE ... DEH, CALMA ) interspersed with broad comedy (AIR A LA TIROLIENNE and RATAPLAN), and her rapport with her audience is on a par with that of an actor in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. There are no barriers, she invites us, literally with open arms, to share her sense of adventure and sense of fun and the audiences surrender to that warmth; the warmth captured so perfectly in this concert DVD; witness the gusto of the final aria YO QUE SOY CONTRABANDISTA, accompanied by Spanish guitar, castanets and clappers, followed by the rapturous appreciation of the audience.
There is also YON MOON O'ER THE MOUNTAINS by Balfe, remarkable, in Cecilia's repertoire, for its unadorned simplicity and unique because she sings in English. Not to be missed in Shall we make a rehearsal? track 7 of DVD 2 is Christopher Raeburn giving Cecilia some pre-performance English coaching in correct pronunciation of mountains and fountains. Charming.
