Description
Vomitory.
Great name. Traditional style DM logo. All spikes & nastiness. A firey hellish bit of cover art, with demons and fire and skulls.
This has to be good right? Well, actually yes, it is.
This is the first and only Vomitory in my collection, and I have to say that it wasn't a bad purchase at all. Infact I am rather lucky in that it was an impulse buy whilst I was mooching around Perth, Oz, with a bit of spare cash in the bin.
So to the album. Well, the vocalist Erik Rundqvist (also bass) should get a commendation for his vocal style on this disc. Its simply awesome. He holds some growlsmore… for what seem like aeons. He has one of those voices that makes death metal all that much more enjoyable. I mean if you really analyse the music form, its the Vocals that are the one thing that makes it so different from any other type of popular music. Everything else has drums, guitars and bass, whether it be the Stone Roses, Iron Maiden, or ghasp...Greenday. Ok, so Death metal might not quite play those instruments quite the same way, but you get what I mean.
Young Erik here, he lets you know you are listening to a death metal disc !!! His bellowing is that of super brutal, ultra deep gruffness. The only let down is that his voice is lost just a smidge in the mix. Not much, but just that little so as to knock a mark off the brutal factor. But, his is a voice of pure death !
The album has lots of blast beating, often in conjuction with the prolonged vocal growls. The riffs are pretty good too. Its not what I would call typical Swedeath metal. It certainly isn't tinged with the fuzzy guitar sound of Entombed or Dismember, and there is no hint of any "metalcore" elements that that part of Scandonavia is famous for producing these days.
Its all out blasting death metal. There are some touches (eg: Demons Devine) that remind me of really old stuff like Immolation's debut, certainly early Hypocrisy (Penetralia era)& even some hints of 'Altars of Madness'. But the music in the main is modern and technical, with lots of (subdued) crash cymbals and as already mentioned, frequent blast beating.
To be honest, I am always going to be drawn to an album that boasts a track called Chainsaw Surgery. This song doesn't dissapoint, as it has just about the perfect mix of all the elements I have mentioned above.
This album is worthy of 5 for its sheer technical effort, but it gets a four because as I have hinted at, it isn't totally original sounding. Thats nothing to deter the death metal fan who likes it ultra brutal (but before it hits grind)and blasting.
Not one for migrane sufferers.
