Description
The Very Best Of Deep Purple (2000.) One of Deep Purple's many hits compilations.Deep Purple is a rock band that never fails to please. For over three decades, they have been giving us some of the best rock and roll the world has ever seen. In 2000 this Best Of compilation was released on Rhino Records. Being a casual fan of the band, I bought it. How does it measure up? Read on and you shall see.PROS:-THIS SET COVERS A GREATER TIME PERIOD THAN MOST DEEP PURPLE COMPILATIONS. The set starts with Hush, from 1968's debut album Shades Of Deep Purple, and is concluded with Knocking At Your Back Doormore… from 1984's Mark Two reunion album Perfect Strangers. That's sixteen years worth of material! And, of course, the set covers all the eras in between.-ALL THE BIG HITS ARE HERE. The cover of Joe South's Hush, plus smash hits like Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, and Woman From Tokyo are all here for your listening pleasure.-UNDERRATED MASTERPIECES CAN BE FOUND HERE, AS WELL. As far as underrated masterpieces go, there are plenty of them on here. There's an awesome cover of Neil Diamond's Kentucky Woman, as well as classic metal-style tunes, like Strange Kind Of Woman and Fireball. There is no shortage of underrated tunes here!-THE TRACK MISSING FROM YOUR VERSION OF THE FIREBALL ALBUM CAN BE FOUND HERE. The band's fifth studio album, 1971's Fireball, was a bit of a strange release. The American version contained Strange Kind Of Woman but omitted Demon's Eye, while on United Kingdom pressings it was vice versa. BOTH of these songs are on this compilation, so buy buying it, you'll get the track you missed out on!-THE BOOKLET IS VERY INFORMATIVE. In the booklet are release dates, track/band information, and a number of other pieces of information you're bound to find interesting. CONS:-KENTUCKY WOMAN AND SPEED KING ARE EDITED VERSIONS. Kentucky Woman is the single version of the track, which is shorter than the original LP version from Book Of Taliesyn, and Speed King is the version featured on United States pressings on Deep Purple In Rock, so it lacks the intro. Why didn't they use the United Kingdom LP originals?-NOTHING PAST 1984. Deep Purple, contrary to popular belief, has had an excellent career PAST 1984, and this compilation takes nothing from it. Too bad.-NO SONGS FROM THE BAND'S SELF-TITLED THIRD ALBUM OR COME TASTE THE BAND. Why don't these albums get any tracks on here? They're just as good as any other Deep Purple releases.-SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE, BOOK OF TALIESYN, DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK, WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE, BURN, STORMBRINGER, AND PERFECT STRANGERS ONLY GET ONE TRACK EACH! Admittingly, I am happy to see the compilers of this compilation do this, as it creates a more diverse mix of material, but I think this proves something - this should have been a TWO DISC set. -NO LIVE MATERIAL. Many fans hail the band's live albums as some of their best releases overall, so why aren't their any live versions featured on this compilation? -THE GILLAN-ERA IS UNFAIRLY OVEREMPHASIZED. I admit, this is Deep Purple's most popular era, but Rod Evans and David Coverdale were excellent singers too, and they really deserve more emphasis than they got. Of the fifteen tracks on here, only four of them do NOT feature Gillan.OVERALL:Final verdict? If you're a casual fan of Deep Purple and don't want to hunt down all of their albums, this is for you. This is the band's best hits compilation to date, and I highly recommend it to all fans of classic hard rock.
