Collections are indeed different things to different people. I bought this to bridge the gaps in my CD collection, the vinyl copies having long since gone missing. In that respect I found it largely worthwhile. Nothing new, nothing really serious missing either I suppose, except "Lazy". The booklet was very good though and I quite enjoyed reading it.I would query the inclusion of some of the tracks though. for the life of me I cannot understand why there are 4 tracks from "Burn" and 3 from each of "Stormbringer" and "Come Taste The Band". Don't get me wrong, I liked these albums each in theirmore… own way when they first came out but this anthology seems to make them too important. "Sail Away" and "Lay Down Stay Down" from the "Burn" album are in my opinion weak tracks. "Burn" and "Mistreated" are as good as anything else DP have ever done and the live versions are strong, but why separate them with "Stormbringer" material?I also reckon that the inclusion of live material is a mistake and begs the question why this one live and not another?I think that the live stuff is best served being on an entirely live album. Use the "anthology" or "best of" formats as tasters of what a band can do, then if you like it, go seek out the best albums and the live stuff separately.Another problem with an anthology is the point in time it represents of course. A band that goes through so many lineup changes and/or has as long a history as this band will go through many musical changes. Go to a DP gig now and you will never hear material from their MKI and MKIII/IV days. So why bother buying this stuff. The MKIII/IV stuff would be better on an anthology of its own, the MKI stuff could be quietly forgotten. Then you could have a MKII early and reformed years anthology. I just hope that nothing from "House of Blue Light" or "The Battle Rages On" gets included. Terrible stuff.
