Trap, the second album of Dead Man Ray, appears to be more complex an album than the first opus of the band. And if Berchem was already a good and interesting disc, it was mainly written under the influence of pop music, or so it seems. Whereas with Berchem you know what kind of music you are listening to, it is impossible to label Trap under a particular genre since it is full of various influences, from industrial music to jazz, from pop to rock. For instance, guitarist Elko Blijweert, who is also playing with Front 242 live, brings an industrial background to the music. On the other hand, Daanmore… Stuyven, the singer, gives firsthand the songs a pop shape, while Rudy Trouvé, a former dEUS member, is an outstanding arranger giving the band its unique sound. Trap is inspired by the music Dead Man Ray composed for the mixed animation Transatlantic and the four-video installation called The Hamlet Machine. The band created loops for those and took them as patterns for their album. Another source of inspiration was At the Drop of a Head, a Belgian movie starring Bobbejaan Schœpen, a famous (old time) chansonnier: Dead Man Ray played music live while the film was projected on screen. They played both songs from the original soundtrack and creations of their own. Finally back to studio, they took some pieces of those compositions to write new songs out of them for their second album. These three different sources of composition make the album rich and truly interesting. Different.
