Description
Masterplan, is the first solo album by drumming virtuoso Dave Weckl. This album features some of the best of Dave early drumming work and this most certainly shows Dave to be a master drummer. The album kicks off with 'Tower Of Insperation' which as Dave playing a great drum solo in the middle, which as any Dave Weckl fan will know, is full of blistering drum chops on the snare drum and the tom-toms, with some very classy cymbal work on Dave's ride. the band are playing is great throughout all of this track (tower of insperation) especally keyboarding virtuoso Jay Oliver, who insidentally composedmore… a lot of the tracks for this album. The second track is 'Here And There' which is a funky shuffle drum track, with some very classy hi-hat work from Dave within this track, this track would be exelent for anyone who loves shuffle grooves, as it has a lot of movement throughout and a grat deal of ups and downs dynamically. Dave also plays some beautiful drum fills on his tom-toms whcih really adds another dimention to this track. The third track on the Masterplan album is 'Festival De Ritmo' which is a latin track with a lot of technical drumming going on throughout this track, execelent dymanic tom-tom work from Dave which can only be described as masterful drumming, I which I could play the drums like that!!The fourth track on the album is 'In Common' which is a slower more softer song, which people who love romantic jazz, will diffentally love. This track if full of romatic sounding saxaphone licks, which are very tasteful, and well positioned throughout this tune. Dave plays some beautiful some almost loving grooves, which people could dance very easilly too, at the end of a ball. The fifth thrack on Masterplan is called 'Garden Wall' now it night have a funny title, but let me assure you that there is nothing funny about this tune, the first time I heard this tune I was completely in love, lovely saxaphone throughout most of the track, execelent keyboard playing by Jay Oliver and most important very moving grooves and execelent fills, buy this album just for this track alone!!!The sixth track on masterplan is 'Auratune', which is a tune with some vocals on the track, which seem to complement all that the other musicians are performing. This track starts of very softly, with a high dynamic build-up after Jay Oliver (keyboards) comes in. This is the only track that Dave plays electonic drums on, and they really do sound great, this song is music to my hears and no mistake. This song (if I close my eyes) almost takes me on a journey to a island in the south pacific, with people chanting to the sound of drums and there is some execelent trumpet work from trumpet virtuoso Jerry Hey.The next track is is 'Softly As In A Morning Sunrise' which again is a soft song to sdtart with but build up all the way through, Dave plays some masterful brush work on this track which is great to hear from time to time. The eighth track on Masterplan is 'Masterplan' which was a track composed by Chick Corea, who Dave spent a lot of is early professional drumming carea playing with. Chick is a master on the piano throuth all of this tune, in fact this album is worth getting just to listen to Chick Corea on this track. A great track, with great piano!!!The Last track is 'Island Magic', this track a some of the best of Jay Oliver keyboard skills on it and some beautiful latin grooves from Dave Weckl, who really makes his drums talk throughout this track. There is a lot of footapable grooves, that really make you want to get up and dance, and this track show us the latin hybridisations that Dave composes in his music, which is always extremly tastful, in all musical angles. So go on a buy this album, you know you want to!!!
