For a long period Ari Hest was touring the USA and playing gigs all over the place, to people who knew his talent all too well, but somehow he remained unsigned for a great deal of time whilst other less tallented artists in the acoustic rock vein were snapped up by record companies. Fortunately, eventually this was rectified and Ari has come to release a very good first album.The sound is more commercial than his self released work, but this is to be expected, and the production quality is obviously improved as a result. The songs are generally inward looking pop numbers, about love, life andmore… relationships, but he has some cheeky and amusing moments.The album opens with his first single 'They're on to me' which seems to be a song about fear, and the loss of the feeling of control which comes along with it. This is a catchy song with nice lyrics and melody which will stay in your head a long time afterwards.The album slows pace somewhat for a few tracks, with the appealing but sad song 'A Fond Farewell' which he sings about leaving his 'ball and chain behind', to let past times and regrets stay behind. This feeling resonates through the album, and is returned to in 'Monsters' when he sings 'Ignorance is underated, 'cause I'd rather forget all about my past. Cruel how these moments never cease to last.'Half the songs are catchy and upbeat, with 'Consitency's' fantastic horn section, and Ari's funky guitar style keeping up the pace.These are peppered in between by introspective, and often lonely songs like the anti-materialist 'Not for long' where he wonders; 'It's the latest, it's in style, it's the intelligent choice. What's the use in screaming "enough" when you're the only voice?'One of my favourite songs is 'Fascinate Me' where Ari wonders about keeping his lover happy, and what earth he has to do to achieve it. He sings it with a little humour; 'You said you always wanted a humble man, so I sold my car and bought a beat up van. I guess that wasn't quite enough for you, so now I only speak up when I don't know how to follow your plan.' Generally this is an excellent and catchy album which shows some of what Ari will be capable of in the future. He's one of the new brand of emerging artists who can write pop songs without discarding substance, and I hope that he has much success in the future.
