I have a theory that every other record by Will Oldham is his unassailable masterpiece which he then follows with something he wants to diffuse expectation with.

This keeps the mystery and his options open.

This theory has got me through the last decade of lisetening to his music and a lot of red wine and whiskey.

So by all my accounts Beware should be a masterpiece. Great news, to me you and the corkscrew: IT IS.

This is a big production number, full of choirs, country, pedal steel - imagine Harvest Moon with some posion and depression in its veins. Tender, nocturnal and grand

Opener Bewaremore… Your Only Friend has wide open arms, but before you get too cosy the Bonnie Prince starts singing about soul sucking. Heart's Arms has the country-dub feeling of I See A Darkness, and Death Final alongside Without Work, You Have Nothing carries on some of his favourtite themes.

Despite his unwillingness to ever really reach out to a wider audience - for which we are all eternally greatful - (I don't think he's ever even supported anyone playing live except maybe Bjork) Beware is a major artistic statement.
