Cocktail Hour is a double-disc collection including almost 30 tracks, many of which are Vaughan favorites. As with other volumes in this series, however, the versions here are by no means definitive. Since there's zero information (the inclusion of track times is about as luxurious as this set gets), there's no way to tell where these versions even come from, though radio transcriptions or V-discs are probably the sources for about half of them. The songs are muddy and every instrument, including Vaughan's voice, sounds at least a step or two behind where they should be standing for the microphonesmore…. On the second disc, there are some tracks of studio quality, ones that display Vaughan in good form ("Misty," "I've Got the World on a String," and "Round Midnight," among others). But the inferior quality tracks crop up here as well — the collection occasionally veers from '40s-vintage track to '60s-vintage track with barely a pause. Though collectors who can sort out the origin of these versions may find material of value, Cocktail Hour most definitely isn't worth consideration by the next-generation swing fans for whom it was obviously tailored.
