Description

This three-disc (two CDs and one DVD) midline multimedia package comes replete with a pair of previously released titles by way of compiling the expanded audio-only "Deluxe Edition" of Bob Marley and the Wailers: Legend (2002) along with the full-length visual companion of the same name. The bottom line remains: regardless of how many times the core material gets reconfigured, it still offers the best overview of Marley's Island Records (1972-1979) era. In its initial incarnation Legend (1984) was a fairly straightforward 14-track anthology with a few hard to find singles among deeper album sidesmore…. Later, CD upgrades would expand the tune stack with "Punky Reggae Party" and "Easy Skanking," not to mention restoring the full-length LP versions of selections once represented formerly by 45 rpm edits. Key components to Marley's best-known output can be found here. While not bound to chronology, there are entries ranging from "Stir It Up" off of Catch a Fire (1973), all the way through to the essential posthumous Confrontation (1983) entry "Buffalo Soldier." The "Deluxe Edition" upped the ante once again with an entire second CD dubbed the "Legend Remixes." Within are a bakers' dozen of early -to mid-'80s manipulations by such heavies as Julian Mendelsohn, Paul "Groucho" Smylik, Eric "E.T." Thorngren, and Godwin Logie. All of which are punctuated by the essential dancehall-meets-discotheque recasting of "Could You Be Loved" by Errol Brown and Alex Sadkin. Many will inevitably find the DVD to be the crowning jewel of the lot. More than a rehashing of old footage and hits, there is a total of nearly two dozen (primarily) full-length clips — some of which are live. Among those considered must-see are the Old Grey Whistle Test shots of "Stir It Up" and "Concrete Jungle" with the 1973 lineup. There is also plenty of footage circa the early '80s, most notably "Revolution," "Zimbabwe," "Redemption Song," "Get Up, Stand Up," and even rare rehearsals of "Forever Loving Jah." As if that wouldn't be enough to satiate the average Marley fan, a co-feature of the DVD is director Declan Lowney's highly acclaimed Marley biopic Time Will Tell (1992). Consumers with 5.1 capabilities are in for even more of a treat as the audio playback includes a hearty Dolby 5.1 Surround option.
