Description
For some time I'd been looking for a Roy Drusky compilation that included his hit version of 'Anymore' with Pete Drake's wonderful, cascading steel guitar intro. Well, I should have done some homework, because this isn't it. In fact, this compilation comprises the two 'hits' albums released by Mercury in the mid-'60s, which included some of Roy's most successful recordings from the period 1963 to 1968, though there's nothing that's up to much. There are 10 A-sides which generated 7 top twenty Billboard hits (including 3 top tens), 8 B-sides, and 2 presumably album tracks - Jim Glaser and Jimmymore… Payne's 'Woman, Woman', and 'Too Much Of You' - which were fillers (or hoped-for hits). The tracks 'Another', 'Anymore' and 'Three Hearts In A Tangle' with which Roy had numbers 2, 3, and 2 hits on Decca, are re-recordings, the bane of any record collector's life; and though not quite duds when compared to the originals, are not much cop either. Roy's hit duet with Kitty Wells 'I Can't Tell My Heart That' isn't included, of course (it was also on Decca). Nor are any of the duets with Priscilla Mitchell, which included the hit no. 1 'Yes, Mr. Peters', which actually were on Mercury. A career 'best of' would include 'Such A Fool' and 'Second Hand Rose', but they were also on Decca. Whether 'greates hits' packages actually represent the 'best of' is a moot point, and perhaps we should acknowledge the difference. Roy Drusky was never one of the real big-hitters, but a career-best compilation would be far better than this one. According to the liner notes, Roy was the first artist to record a Kristofferson song ('Jody And The Kid' - and not bad too), but even that is not included here, even though it was released by Mercury in 1968. Roy was a pleasant enough singer, with an eye for a good song, and a decent songwriter himself. This album shows why he was sometimes referred to as the country Perry Como. Don't get me wrong, this compilation is OK, and reasonable value with 23 songs totalling just under one hour's music. But, as they say, buyer beware. (Wish I had been!).
