These two albums and in my view also Power and the Glory are uncompromisingly the best of Gentle Giant's output.

This is an extraordinary fusion of ProgRock/Folk genres tending very much towards the rock end of the spectrum [but NB - nothing at all like Fairport Convention/Steelye Span/Gryphon etc...!] blended with their own unique musical inventiveness that also draws on many classical forms (On Reflection for example is a full fuge, His Last Voyage also includes fugato passages). It is also superbly played - as rock music and has a real power and drive to it.

There is nothing like this outmore… there in the field of Rock music and it rewards listening countless times - there is always more going on that emerges. While this is complex music that plays with rhythm and harmony to an extreme degree it is genuinely rock music and (in my view) very, very 'listenable' music as well as being very cleverly put together. It is not an abstraction or in any sense an experiment that does not quite work, however diverse.

For example So Sincere (Power and the Glory) sounds initially like one of their most experimental and 'difficult' tracks but the way it progressively comes together is very clever indeed.

I know of nothing so inventive these days, but I would always be glad to be proved wrong. Do not hesitate to buy this. It is unique and brilliant.
