Description

It's likely that you may have heard Coo Coo Cal's the first single from Disturbed the billboard topping "My Projects". Riding a re-manufactured West Coast production set, Cal (the Coo Coo part allegedly refers to his "quirky" approach) drops rhymes in distinctive Midwest slang though his lyrics--all about strugglin' in da hood--don't address anything particularly new. Disturbed offers a little more in the way of variety but there's still not too much to inspire in the lyrical department. Beats on the LP come courtesy of Kay Gee and Big Hank, and though they sometimes contain flashes of originalitymore…, for the most part they sound a tad stale, re-heated West Coast and Dirty South sounds. There's some good collaborations with cats such as fellow mid-Westers MC Twista, Koffee Brown, Midwikid, Mr Do It To Death, Kela and a few others but the main reason for digging this joint is Cal's on-point flow and his ability to throw up occasional patches of colourful wordplay. With better production and more imaginative tales, Cal might just live up to his own hyperbole. -Paul Sullivan
