Max Roach is, alongside Art Blakey, the definitive hard bop drummer, who in the late 1950s released some superb albums containing the amount of heat usually only found in a forest fire. This album is no exception, indeed Deeds, Not Words is one of the very best examples of Roach's music. From the opening track of "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" onwards Roach's drumming simply rages, drives the beat forward, whilst trumpet player Booker Little and sax player George Coleman weave in and out of the tunes. There's even a tuba player! Together with We Insist! Freedom Now Suite this is an album which ismore… not only a good place to start if you want to hear fire and brimstone--jazz style--but frankly is essential for any half decent jazz collection. The title of the album, incidentally reflects, like many of this era's Roach albums, the drummer's commitment to the Civil Rights movement, which was then sweeping the States. --Phil Brett
