Description
Chuck Berry's criminally underrated, he is both the 1st poet and the 1st true guitar god of Rock N' Roll.Lyrically he invented a slick urban slang. He set his love stories in the modern world: 'Refrigerators', 'Cadillacs', 'phones' cluttered Chucks world, giving the song's a identifiable point of reach with the audience. His attention for detail ''a coffee coloured Cadillac'' ''700 records, all rock rhythm and jazz''His humour ''I was campaign shouting like a southern diplomat'', all No Particular Place to go.Chuck could create a entire verse out of place names (sweet little sixteen, Back in themore… usa), he was also the greatest exponent of the car song (no money down, jaguar and thunderbird)How many school dropout guitarist can related to ''he never learnt to read or write so well but he could play the guitar just like a-ringin a bell''Chuck's second great genius was his guitar playing. What more can be said about the Johnny Be Goode ?, the most famous guitar intro in history. Essential to any aspiring guitarist as Smoke On The Water and Teen Spirit. That lick in School Days and No Particular Place to Go, every guitarist from Keith, Steve Jones to Slash has used that lick, it is the most repeated lick in history. Chuck used two fingered lead lines which has become the Rock N' Roll lead guitar cliché. His band are also instrumental in the sound. Blues god Willie Dixon (bass) and Johnnie Johnston (piano) gave Berrys music a groove, a feeling which still reve rates today. Chuck could be varied a lot, its nice to see that The Anthology has included 'Havana Moon' (latin) and 'Bio' (blues) highlighting his different styles. 'Maybellene' itself was influenced by Hillbilly. Its one of life's great joys in discovering obscure Chuck Berry songs like Betty Jean, Sweet Little Rock a Roller and Childhood Sweetheart which equal and sometimes even beat his famous songs.Chuck almost had his career cut short with a prison spell but instead came out in the mid-60's with incredible songs like Nadine, No Particular Place to go and You Never Can Tell. As a writer he was extremely prolific.Chuck Berry's influence simply cannot be overstated. The Beatles, the Stones virtually built there entire career around him by Berry covers. Dylan couldn't have wrote 'Subterranean Homesick Blue' without Chuck's 'Too Much Monkey Business'. The Beach Boys with Surfin USA, Lennon's Come Together bares a resemblance to You Can't Catch Me. Beck, Yardbirds, Animals all successfully claimed a song or 2 a piece from the Berry cannon.Buying a compilation of Chuck Berry can be a daunting experience. Faced with numerous cheaply packaged hits sets, many with bad sound, it can be difficult to get that all important 'value for money'.This brilliantly packaged 2 CD set neatly bridges the gap between the many millions of single CD sets ('the great 28' is best) and the 3 CD lavishly packaged The Chess Years boxset. So which is better? The Chess Years or this. With the boxset you get 21 tracks but its VERY expensive, some essentials (Run Rudolph Run) some, especially from the latter years are nonessential. The Anthology has 4 songs not on the Chess Years, most notably the quirky 'Guitar Boogie'. The major turning point with the boxset is the sound. One of the big controversy's with putting rock on CD is the digital mastering which cleans up the track. Rock should sound raw the way it was on the jukebox in the 1950's. This Anthology thankfully sounds wonderful, the guitars close up in the mix but with a slight Distortion. The guitar on 'Maybellene' has never sounded better, nor has the bass on 'I'm Talking About You'. Wannabe Guitarista who want to learn that frantic famous intro to 'Johnny Be Goode' will hear every single two fingered lick The Anthology is simply a joy to listen to. Take my advice, plunge for this. The Anthology is near definitive, near because the omission of the Christmas single is sad. 'Run Rudolph Run' is one of my favourite Berry songs. 'Little Maria', is also contender. With those tracks added to the CD's substantial but hardly full 60 odd mins time limit there you have it, the ultimate presentation of Chuck Berry's music. That aside this is the closest yet and should more then fulfil most peoples needs.
