Saying that Chris Whitley's albums are like a box of chocolates (you never know what you're going to get) would be going to far, but it is true in a sense. We have had soft pop country rock on his smooth debut Living with the Law, totally dark, hermetic guitar anarchy on Din of ecstacy, a bit of both on terra Incognita (possibly his best album to date to me), strangely heartfelt acoustic songs and covers (Dirt Floor and Perfect Day) and now... The artwork of the album suggests Chris has found inspiration in cityscapes. And that is what it sounds like: turntables, loops, drum computers, keyboardsmore…, electric and acoustic guitar make Rocket House a fascinating encounter between hip modern rock sounds and Whitley's bluesy country song approach. It results in radiomaterial (yes, even hits) like Radar: clear and simple sounding melodies in smooth arrangements, but there are plenty of darker, more difficult and complexer modern rock blues songs. Yet, the album never loses its emotional value or coherence. Rocket House is not an easy album, it has many musical and emotional layers. Guitar fans will be surprised by its electronic sound. And the sound freaks will wonder what the guitars are doing there. But Rocket House is a searching album of a rare and unique quality, worth discovering. As a genuine grower, it rewards every single time you listen to it. And that is what music is all about, isn't it?
