My familiarity with Chicago doesn't extend much farther than this one album, but there are some great 80s tunes on here. I'm not so much a fan of the group as I am individual songs - a part of me still says that it isn't exactly manly to enjoy the music of Chicago (these guys must sing about two octaves higher than I do). There is definitely a link, though, between my early teens and songs such as Hard Habit to Break, Along Comes a Woman, and You're the Inspiration. These songs were a small comfort to me in those angst-ridden days of unrequited love. As far as singles go, I believe there weremore… four hit releases (Stay the Night plus the three tracks I just mentioned), but Only You, Once in a Lifetime, and Remember the Feeling are of the same high caliber and could have easily have garnered a good bit of radio play. As with so many things in life, though, the good doesn't come without the bad. Listening to this CD again for the first time in many years, it becomes instantly clear that I like Peter Cetera much more than I like Chicago. The songs featuring someone else on lead vocals just don't appeal to me at all. Please Hold On, for example, is the musical equivalent of a wet noodle, and We Can Stop the Hurtin' comes dangerously close to sounding like elevator music to me. Overall, the music holds up well, though. I still like the songs I liked back in the 80s, and I still can't stand the ones I didn't like back then. It is doubtful that I will ever buy another Chicago album, but I am glad I own this one. Songs like Hard Habit to Break take me right back to the 1980s, and that is always a very good thing. Without that 80s connection, I probably wouldn't care much for this album one way or the other, and I suspect that younger listeners will not warm up to this type of music very easily. This is just exceedingly soft rock that must sound alien to those raised on the hard, edgy material of today.
