The cascading waterfall of chimes and the pristine, almost sugary, melange of "East meets West" romanticism in the keyboard work for the main theme to this score belie the psychological turmoil and atmospheric sound design that consume most of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. "Batavia" exhibits a most peculiar juxtaposition, looping a hectic music box jingle on top of a recording of foot traffic and passing cars on a busy downtown street. The movement of people, or anything carbon-based, is noticeably missing in "Before The War", "Beyond Reason" and "Assembly", which revolve aroundmore…
