Ezra are four and a bit albums into one of those careers where chart success is ten years behind them, yet their music gets more mature and their fan-base more rabid. Mixing classic rock and pop sources with a hint of their New Orleans heritage, Ezra make great music, and in Kevin Griffin, have a charismatic leader and lyricist. Released barely a month before their fifth album, this is an interesting retrospective and ideal for the first-time listener. "Hits" such as "Good" and "King of New Orleans" are here, along with about the right balance of songs from their later albums. Of course, asmore… with any best of, my own favourites are not all here, and in truth there is little for the fan that is new, but a "French Radio" version of fan favourite "This Time of Year" is genuinely lovely. Noted for their occasional covers, here is a version of "Laid" by James that makes me smile, even if it is hardly an essential addition to the canon. Dropped by Elektra at the start of the decade, Ezra are thriving as a live band (though it is a shame that they don't seem to make it to europe) and last year's "live at the House of Blues" probably presents a better view of the band as they have grown (as well as including many of the songs here). An inessential but still wonderful selection from one of "those" bands - give them a try and you'll come back for more.
