Admittedly, I've only played the first 50 years, but I'm putting this game back in its box for a while.

There's definitely potential within the game, the graphics are crisp and I like the development of the generals and consuls etc, with their own traits and family ties.

However, the actual game is rather frustrating, no doubt some of the minor issues will be fixed in later patches (I'm running 1.1) but there are a number of unrealistic outcomes of combat and movement. For example, a ship travelling to another sea province, will have to repeat the ground it has already covered if you selectmore… another province that requires the ship to go through that original province. This can be avoided by holding shift, but it's not intuitive.

I think the most frustrating element is the lack of control one feels. Your leader, the consul, changes often and you have no say in the matter. Recently during my second war with Carthage, I had taken seven or eight provinces, including Carthage, and had a warscore of 51%, yet despite offering a number of different combinations of what were very generous settlements (i.e. 50% or less) Carthage rejected peace every time.

If I were you I'd hold off buying this game for a while, if at all. In my opinion Rome Total War is far better.

Disappointing.
