This smooth, relaxing album is a classic from The Carpenters. Karens' voice eases your troubles as she takes you through 12 songs and ends with a reprise of the title track which also starts the album, "A Song For You". This song is a true masterpiece, Karens' voice pulls on the strength of the instruments and draws them into angelic pitch with her haunting tones. This is one of their first album releases and from listening to the songs it's easy to see how they've acclaimed so many loyal fans. Song two on the album cannot be compared to another, "Top of the World", a top ten single of the earlymore… 70's, the stomping pop, easy melody and fun lyrics make it impossible to not sing along to it! I especially like the unmistakeable Carpenter harmonies in that song. Track three, "Hurting Each Other" is a raw, hearty 1970's song, with a thunderous chorus. "It's Going to Take Sometime" slots into 4th place, a typical 3 minute song of its' era, not one of my favourites, perhaps because it's missing The Carpenters' lyrical touch, for this song is written by Carole King, a strong artist in her own right. "Goodbye to Love" follows, a slower love song, with a ballad-breaking electric guitar intro and ending, a new rebel style, or so the critics thought at the time. Next is a 23 second almost a capella harmony titled, "Intermission".Song 7 was used in a film of the same title, "Bless the Beast and the Children". A beautiful song to bridge the album, a song to inspire a rosey future for our children, not to judge but to give everyone a choice. Title 8, "Flat Baroque", shows off Richards' musical talents, 100% intrumental song, led by flute and piano. Track 9,"Piano Picker", we find Karen absent apart from backing vocals on this song, Richard leads the vocals, a very bouncy song. But here we are on track 10, Karen's back with the beautifully titled, "I Won't Last a Day Without You". Karens' deep range carries this over the rainbow and beyond, the unfaultering, powerfully delivered words, expressing the loneliness how only Karen could, with so many warm emotions, this song has to be a classic. Song 11,"Crystal Lullaby" is a little more than a lullaby, a lullaby spun into a musical tapestry. My favourite song on this love-themed album is track 12, "Road Ode". The simple title hides a complex song, wrapped in minor keys and smothered in reminisence, tells the tale of life on the road, but with a flip-side of how this relates into a relationship. The album ends as I said previously, with a reprise of the title track,"A Song For You". A harp invites Karens' voice in from a haunting corridoor, then bangs in with full force with the end part of the song. The album still holds high standards within the modern day pop industry, their arrangements, lyrics and melodys are second to none,keeping their albums selling even twenty years since The Carpenters' last recording session. From their strong foundations they have grown in peoples' hearts, and as long as people are touched by their songs, there will always be The Carpenters.
