Prenda Minha, the live-in-Rio follow-up to Veloso's Grammy-winning Livro, lacks the polish of that studio recording while featuring a somewhat different song list. Veloso plays his own and others' songs with a versatile band that includes both strings and Afro-Brazilian percussion. But since he has the gift of being able to seduce audiences with the concert-hall equivalent of a lover's whisper, the highlights are the simpler tunes that focus on Veloso and his guitar. To his credit, Veloso avoids a rehash of hits or concert-hall rave-ups, while conveying a distinctive range of intimate hues.
