While Zephyr's first album, self-titled, was a heavy foray into the world of blues-rock ala Big Brother and The Holding Company with a hint of Led Zeppelin, the band's second album is in marked contrast to it's predecessor.On Going Back to Colorado, the band have obviously taken a chill pill, because this album is a far more laid back and mellow affair. Thus you get the Airplane-ish Miss Libertine, the sweet balladeering of I'll Be Right Here, or the stoned-love vibrations of Take My Love, with it's Country Joe style vocals from organ player John Faris.For people looking to here the guitar playingmore… of axe-hero Tommy Bolin, this is probably not the best album to hear him on. Not because his playing is poor. Far from it. The gorgeous wah-wah solo on Mis Libertine is beautifully well-timed, and the blues licks on See My People Come Together are masterful. However, his playing is far more understated than that of the debut. It refuses to leap out and take over. This is not the Tommy Bolin Band. If you like early West-Coast sounding psychedelia, than this album is for you. It fits in perfectly with the hippy ideal that was doing the rounds back then. If you prefer to rock out a bit more, and plug in your air-guitar, you're better off with the self-titled debut.Either way, both albums are worth adding to your collection, and are ample reminder of the fact that if you delve deeper into the history of rock music, you are always liable to find hidden gems like Zephyr.
