This Charly collection does include early recordings, so the title is technically correct. Buyers hoping that these come direct from the Sun studio, however, will be mistaken and probably disappointed (what, no "Mystery Train"?!). Instead, The Early Recordings consists of live tracks (most likely from 1956) by Elvis with his trio: guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, and hired gun D.J. Fontana on drums. The sound quality is atrocious — par for the course on any early live material by Elvis — and the sources are unknown, thanks to lax documentation by the label. Amazingly enoughmore…, these performances amaze anyway, despite the frequent blasts of crowd noise — sounding more like shortwave static than enthusiasm. The 21-year-old Presley rocks and rolls the audience, runs through a spate of early material ("Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender," "Hound Dog") and covers from the R&B canon ("I Got a Woman," "Good Rockin' Tonight," "Long Tall Sally"), and tosses off between-song commentary with a bemused, utterly confident humor. Better sources for this material include any of the Louisiana Hayride releases or RCA's A Golden Celebration box set of live and unreleased material.
