Description
I went to see this show as I loved Culture Club/Boy George, but mainly because Lyn Paul was playing the main character Billy's mother Josie - I was blown away by the whole show! I can't fault any of the cast or the inclusion of any of the tracks on the album (well, except maybe one - sorry Gemma Craven fans!). This album proves what a genius of a songwriter Boy George is. The fact that all the different performers make the songs their own, and, you don't immediately think "this is a Culture Club track" prove how clever a lyricist he is. A lot of the songs are 'stripped down' versions of tracksmore… George has recorded in the last few years plus songs written especially for 'Taboo'. Stand out tracks have to be "Out Of Fashion" which George recorded on " U Can Never B 2 Straight" performed amazingly here by Drew Jaymson. It's not often anyone comes close to bettering George on one of his own songs! BUT, Matt Lucas does just that on "Ich Bin Kunst" - surely one of the best songs heard in the West End - ever! Then we have Euan Morton, what can I say? George reincarnate! And what a beautiful voice - "Stranger In This World" just breaks your heart, then you hear him on "Guttersnipe" and the gorgeous "Pie In The Sky" - stunning vocals. Next up is Paul Baker as Philip Sallon, the last I heard, he was up for an award for his portrayal - I hope he got it, it would have been well deserved. The character of Billy is played here by Luke Evans (currently touring in 'Miss Saigon') he has a really great voice - but, I have to say, I preferred his successor Declan Bennett. His mother Josie was played by Mari Wilson, Jackie Clune and Gemma Craven at various times - NONE of them, talented as they are, came close to bettering Lyn Paul, visually or vocally. I only wish Lyn's version of "Independant Woman" had been included instead of Gemma Craven's - sorry Gemma, Lyn outsang you by millennia! At least we have Lyn's version of "Talk Amongst Yourselves" which was going to be a single, but 1st Night Records sneaked a few copies out before George was ready, so he pulled it back from release. A great shame, this song, sung beautifully by Lyn Paul could, and should, be a West End classic. "Il Adore" one of my all-time favourite songs by George is sung here by Gail Mackinnon, who brings a chill to your spine with her heartbreaking version. Gail can currently be seen on tour with Julian Clary. He played Leigh Bowery fabulously for a few months and obviously met Gail during his time in 'Taboo' and liked her so much, he invited her to tour with him. All the tracks on 'Taboo' are worth a mention - not one track has slipped in undeservedly. Well done to ALL the cast, especially Matt Lucas, Drew Jaymson and Lyn Paul, and well done Boy George. 'Taboo' has to be one of the best Cast Albums released ever, even if you haven't seen the show, the album stands up on it's own, well worth buying :-)
