This lavishly produced, limited edition 15-CD Chess Records box set ranks easily among the most desirable rock collections ever manufactured. The Chicago label, established by Polish immigrant brothers Phil and Leonard Chess, brought the thrill of artists as diverse as Sunnyland Slim, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf to white audiences for the first time. Chess also nurtured some of the greatest doo-wop combos, including the Moonglows, Flamingos and Dells, as well as the twin linchpins of the music that would inspire virtually every white rock combo of the Sixties,more… Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. This massive set includes all of those Chess milestones, from "Bilbo Is Dead"--a haunting piano-led blues by their first artist, Andrew Tibbs--through Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88"--a 1951 R&B chart-topper, reckoned by many to have been the very first rock & roll waxing--up to soul delights like "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass and the Ramsey Lewis classic "Wade In The Water". All of this, plus a beautifully bound hardback book of essays, a CD ROM and an interview CD, adds up to a hard-to-beat package of delights.
