Description

Blue Murder are a kind of folk supergroup, with a line-up constantly shifting due to availability and (in the sad case of Lal Waterson) untimely death. Until this point, they have engaged only in sporadic live performances, so No One Stands Alone is notable as their recording debut. Here, their personnel-list features some famous names indeed. There's Martin Carthy and his prodigiously talented daughter Eliza, Norma Waterson and her brother Mike, as well as Jim Boyes, Barry Coope and Lester Simpson. For the most part, the album consists of traditional folk songs, with the singers harmonisingmore… over a single strummed guitar. "Gown of Green" and "The Banks Of Sweet Primroses" are evocatively English and particularly touching, while "Standing On The Promise Of God" and "The Land Where You Never Grow Old" are old American gospel, beautifully done. But there's also the more roustabout Northern comedy of Mike Waterson's "Rubber Band", "Three Day Millionaire" and "Mole In The Hole", the Texas country of "Blue Mountain", and Boyes' "The Goodnight Song" which brings the album to a melancholy but movingly hopeful conclusion. There are some real gems here; proof, if any were needed, that Blue Murder should become a more solid concern. --Dominic Wills
