I bought this album in a shop while I was on holiday in France (having listened to just one track in the shop) because I was trying to find out more about French music. But then I found that this album is a real gem. Olivia Ruiz's personality is stamped through every track on this album - witty, amusing, quirky, theatrical - but with loads of musical ideas. And some of the vocal performances on this album are excellent - and in quite varying ways - for example she makes a great job of the "romantic" duet "Non-dits", but also puts in a brilliantly theatrical performance on the comic satire "more…La petite voleuse". The music arrangements are also outstanding - often with unusual combinations of instruments. There's a wide range of styles from cabaret-style songs through sultry ballads through more conventional singer-songwriter type material to a big-production song, the superb "Vitrier". The songs are mainly in French with two songs in Spanish (the flamenco-style one "Molinera" might be a bonus track) and there's one song with fairly strange lyrics in English. This album has been a big hit in France and I can see why. Knowing some French is a help (French lyrics are included in the booklet) but is certainly not essential.
