Ten Years After - I'm Going Home (1996) Retail CD
Although I already owned all TYA albums, I nevertheless added this cheap compilation to my collection. Since there are so many TYA compilations, this one must be special. Basically, it is special because it gives such a broad overview of the different styles the band recorded during their seven years on record, and there is both some live and some studio material. This makes it both excellent introduction as well as 'shuffle play'-material, but I admit for all its spottiness I just happen to LIKE Ten Years After's output. To begin with my favourite feature of this band: the jazz styled numbersmore… 'Woodchoppers' ball' (live!) and 'Me and my baby' are inclusions you rarely find on TYA compilations, as is what sounds to be their highpoint of fame: the Woodstock live version of their best known song, 'I'm going home'. Then there is the beautiful single 'I'd love to change the world'. The more typical TYA bluesrock-with-extravagant solo's is also represented here - 'Love like a man', '50,000 miles...', and 'Woke up this morning' are essential if you like this band - but fewer of them than you'd expect: where are 'One of these days' and 'You give me loving'? Instead, you get some generic album material, and even 'Positive vibrations' and 'It's getting harder' from their last album, which are rather untypical and forgettable. Nevertheless, this also features 'Stoned Woman' (one of my favourites, see 'Sssh') and 'R&R to the world' which largely make up for this. The packaging however is awful and contains no information whatsoever, so if you're interested in where these songs come from you'll be disappointed. Given its low price, the number of songs, and the varied contents however I'd let the music speak for itself and recommend this as an introduction: if there's nothing on this CD that suits your taste, then TYA is definitely not for you.
