I write this review not to discourage those who enjoy (or prefer) Merle's mid-nineties re-recordings of his hits, but to inform those looking for the originals, these aren't them! Merle was payed to re-record most of his Capitol and MCA hits, and they have appeared on a staggering amount of re-issues (some suprisingly quite successful). It's not that some of these versions aren't good, because they are, But how could anyone really expect Merle to really get up for re-recording old hits almost exactly the same? Anyone who has seen Merle live knows that isn't his nature. If you like Merle's voicemore… in his later years, check out the fantastic trio of albums released in recent years ("If I Could Only Fly", "Roots Vol.1" and "The Peer Sessions") If you want to hear his classic old hits, seek out the originals (which are now available on several releases) or open your wallet and get the box set. To me, it's the best single collection of music available- period!
