Description
"Back It Up", the album, represents some of the very best of Robin Trower and should be in every Trower fan's collection. It will be argued here that it is the best complete album since 1974's well-known "Bridge of Sighs". Some of the highlights of the original "Back It Up" album include the grittiness and forcefulness of the leadoff title track, "Back It Up", followed perfectly by James Dewar's soulful lyrics and the easily accessible tune on "The River", and the pick-up-the-pace power of the third track, "Black to Red". Some other favorites of this writer are the driving rhythm of "Settlemore… the Score", and the electrifying guitar work at the close of "None But the Brave". This song ends with an exciting barrage of Trower's guitar which too soon fades out, leaving one muttering to himself, "Hot, hot--that was so hot!"But alas, one is only left with the empty feeling of wanting to start a crusade to find the inventor of such a musical fadeout and properly pulverize the idiot! As an album, "Back It Up" has an honesty that is missing from the previous effort, "Victims of the Fury". Although "Victims" had some very good material, notably "Madhouse" and "Roads to Freedom", most of that album did not conect with this writer in the same emotional way of "Back It Up". I can't adequately explain why, but I think this difference can best be described as the total of the spirit and force making up the album. Whatever "Victims" lacked in depth, Trower and Dewar made up for with a vengeance on "Back It Up". Although 1974's "Bridge of Sighs" will always be regarded by many as THE MASTERWORK of Robin Trower, this writer casts his vote for "Back It Up" as its equal in stature.Mysteriously unavailable in retail stores (and unorderable, too) "Back It Up" is now again available on the "Beat Goes On" label on Amazon. This new release is from 1999 (the album was originally released in 1982)and is identical to the original except that its cover is white, whereas the first version was black. My personal thanks go out to "Beat Goes On" for the re-release of this classic album. If you're a new Trower fan, or one who never collected "Back It Up" I heartily recommend purchasing a copy of it from Amazon. It's truly Trower/Dewar at their musical best.Reviewed 11-9-01 by:GaryLShelton@Home.com
