Monster Magnet - Monolithic Baby (2004) Retail CD
Monolithic Baby! could be seen as a new start for Monster Magnet. Released more than three years since their previous album, God Says No, and now on a new record label, Dave Wyndorf and his space-rock stoner cronies have seen an opportunity to go back to basics. For the most part, Monolithic Baby! is a straightforward rock album, with the heavy riffs, sleazy lyrics and fantastic themes that made their name ("On the Verge", for example, starts off with "Come alive in the back of my trailer" before stating later, "Such a strain when you live on a Death Star"). Even a cover of Hawkwind's "The Rightmore… Stuff" proves that they haven't lost touch with their space-rock roots. While some fans may miss the studio-wizardry that marked their previous albums, it hasn't affected their epic sound--even with the inevitably smaller budget that comes from working with a smaller label. What is missing, however, is standout tracks. Stretched over 12 tracks, most of the songs on Monolithic Baby! tend to merge, and this crushing, riff-heavy onslaught does get a bit too indistinct. But still, even when they're not at their best, Monster Magnet still manage to rock like muthas. --Robert Burrow
