added on August 30, 2008, at 23:02 by franalan| We all know it is great fun to slag off the eighties, but while we aren't being painfully cool, we can take a moment to consider what is good and what worked in that decade. Great big drum beats! Disco rhythms! Synth galore! Get over yourself- this is fun! This record is of its time, but it shows how good eighties synth cheese can be, when it is done right. Even in eighties form, Young's songs still have what counts, and that is soul. On a side note, I can't believe that people even dislike the sleeve cover. To me, it ties in well with what hangs in the background of the album- the hangover from the hippie years, the failure of counter-culture, which Young seemed to represent. Wasn't it the eighties when he caused a scene by expressing support for Ronald Reagan? This is the sound of the hippie era dying- isn't that what really upset people about the album? Maybe not. Oh well, I recomend you listen for yourself. | |
