Default A Tribe Called Quest - Hits Rarities and Remixes (2003) Retail CD

Music > Albums > A Tribe Called Quest - Hits Rarities and Remixes (2003) Retail CD
added on August 28, 2007, at 22:49 by Sarge!

With A Tribe Called Quest stuck in a curious limbo (Hits, Rarities and Remixes arrives after their re-formation has been announced, but plans are still vague), stopgap releases are probably something of a help. After all, it's been five years since the group, once fĂȘted by hip-hop die-hards, alt rock fans and style magazine readers simultaneously, last made a proper LP. And even that album, The Love Movement, did its best to sunder the consensus, with reviewers and fans divided on its complex merits. What is required now is a collection that showcases Tribe's greatest work, ready to reintroduce them to their old audience, and help them be found by a new one. The thing is, Jive's excellent Anthology already exists, so this hotch-potch of remixes, two less-than-exhilarating unreleased tracks ("Mr Incognito" and "The Night He Got Caught"), sundry soundtrack fillers, what appear to be randomly selected album tracks and some singles does them little justice. At its best, this album contains some excellent music--it's impossible to fault classics like "Award Tour", "Oh My God" or the blistering posse cut, "Scenario". But those two unreleased tracks apart, there's nothing here to divert buyers from the superior and more satisfying Anthology. --Angus Batey
