Default Sessions - Cajmere Vs Green Velvet (2006) Retail CD

Curtis Jones is something of a shape shifter, impossible to pin down. That seems to be the way he likes it. And this double Cd is a perfect sample of what he does best: stun, surprise and reinvent.

The premise for the album has a touch of insanity about it: a battle between two sides of the same personality. But all the contradictions and counterattacks within the collection demonstrate Jones' versatility and the extraordinary range of his abilities.

Cd1 features the hit `Brighter Days' and is in a sense the brighter side: the Cajmere side. Upbeat vocals keep the mood optimistic: `He is' affirms `Search for joy, search for peace, don't look back'. But there are still surprises. James Holden's remix of Safari on track 3, is one of the quirkiest. And after the perhaps inadvertently named `Choice' at the end of the first side, comes the flip side.

Cd2 is your `ride to the aftershow'. The sound is darker, punkesque with some 80's electro added to the mix. The beat is dirtier, faster and the feel is edgier. Each song has a narrative, telling sometimes dark, sometimes funny stories that reel you in and keep hold of you, playing over in your head. Mostly, you get the feeling Jones is really enjoying himself.

Cajmere vs Green Velvet is a sample of some of the most original dance music from one of the most original producers around. And it's pretty much everything a fan would want - spanning Jones' entire mischievous career from its bright of its heights to the dark of its depths.
