This one is about a teenage girl who fights vampires. That description and the title is usually enough to have people rolling their eyes in dismay, but those people would be wrong. This is one of the best TV shows of recent years, despite its origin as a so-so film. Perky little button Buffy Summers may seem like a typical teenage airhead, but this Buffy has a sacred duty - she is the one and only vampire slayer. Pretty soon, she teams up with school librarian and font of all supernatural knowledge Giles, adorable nerd Willow, and slightly useless smart-alec Xander in the battle against an onslaught of weird happenings. Key to the success of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is creator/producer/writer/director Joss Whedon, whose mixture of sensibilities suffuses this series. You've got laughs, action, scares, and drama all mixed together in the Buffy pot, and they all sit side by side without ever seeming jarring or inappropriate. As good as this one is, season one of Buffy isn't perfect. The X-Files is a pervasive influence, partly in the show's murky visuals, but also in the decidedly ropey 'monster-of-the-week' episodes like I Robot, You Jane and Teacher's Pet. The result is a somewhat inconsistent feel to this first batch of adventures. Flaws aside, this was a pretty good start to the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series. It's always funny (even during the lesser episodes you can always count on a quip or two to perk things up) and all the pieces are in place for the truly great show that would emerge during its second year. Joss Whedon has done something very impressive here, which is to take a superficially daffy idea like a cheerleader who battles the undead and injected it with enough charm, humour, emotion, and believable characters that you can't help but care about it all. I recommend this unreservedly to everyone - even you eye-rollers who think it sounds stupid.
