added on June 14, 2007, at 23:01 by rabthescot| Brenda Lee was one of the most successful singers of the early sixties, when she was still just a teenager. As the sixties progressed, her music mellowed, with fewer rocking songs and more ballads. In the seventies, she switched to country music, thus returning to her roots. All these aspects of her career are represented in this fine anthology, which begins with Jambalaya, a song that Brenda covered when aged just eleven.Brenda had many hits in America and around the world, but the hits were not always the same in each country. Speak to me pretty, Brenda's biggest UK hit, was not even released as a single in the USA. Generally, Brenda's biggest American hits were ballads, while her biggest British hits were rockers. All her big American hits are included here, but Speak to me pretty is missing - not surprising, as this is an American compilation. Fans who want that song can find it on a British compilation.Among her classic pop hits to be found here are Let's jump the broomstick, Rocking around the Christmas tree, Sweet nothings, I'm sorry, Emotions, Dum dum, Fool number one, All alone am I, As usual, Coming on strong and Johnny one time.Brenda made several country albums in the seventies and early eighties. This anthology does not do full justice to this aspect of her career, but Nobody wins, Big four poster bed, Rock on baby, Tell me what it's like and Broken trust show just how good she was at it.Brenda has been poorly served when it comes to CD releases, especially the later stuff, but this is the strongest compilation of her music yet released. | |
