Vanessa Williams - Everlasting Love (2005) Retail CD

added on May 29, 2007, at 05:25 by elejoe| Admittedly, we really didn't need another collection of covers of 70's classics. The novelty has long worn off after the barrage of albums that came out recently - some good, some best left alone, and some only fit for flogging on television specials. Popular thinking is that "retro" goes back twenty years, so it's time for the big eighties hair to come swinging our way. Having said that, one can't help enjoying classic R&B songs, especially when they're performed by a singer of the caliber of Vanessa Williams. Predictably, this is quite a good album. Thankfully, she mostly stays away from the usual crop of songs, collaborating with the legendary George Benson on two tracks, "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "With You I'm Born Again", and giving her own interpretation of Stevie Wonder's "Send One Your Love". Even the favorite old chestnut "Midnight Blue" gets a new sound, as do her heartfelt renditions of "First Time Ever I saw Your Face" and "You Are Everything". Well sung, pleasant listening, but not essential for a collection. Amanda Richards | |
