It only lasted for one season — 24 episodes — but on each show he performed his old hits, plus new songs with special duet partners. 32 Pop's double-disc set Greatest Performances collectis highlights from the show, including re-recordings of "She's a Lady" and "Green, Green Grass of Home," plus solo covers of "Yesterday," "Take It to the Limit," "Unchained Melody" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." These pleasant but unexceptional recordings would be enough to make this set of interest to collectors, but even casual fans might want to hear Tom sing "Hot Legs" with Tina Turner or tear through the Bee Gees' "Guilty" with Gladys Knight. Those are two of six duets on the record; the others feature Dionne Warwick, Donny Osmond, Marie Osmond and Stephanie Mills. These duets are interesting, but they don't quite live up to expectations. Which means, of course, that Greatest Performances is a bit of hyperbolic title, but Tom Jones was never fond of subtlety in the first place ... | |
