added on August 23, 2010, at 21:16 by stskMott the Hoople was formed in 1969 when singer Ian Hunter was dropped like a firecracker into an otherwise undistinguished band called Silence.
Notwithstanding the failure of their previous albums (Mad Shadows" and "Wild Life"), 1972's Brain Capers is where Hunter's Dylanesque shouting began to work with rather than against the thick, raucous guitar, roller-coaster organ, and thundering bass and drums of the core group.
At this point, his songwriting was also rapidly progressing.
This album is hard rocking, like on the opening track "Death May Be Your Santa Claus." However, Ian Hunter could be tuneful too. Other highlights include Mott's future concert staple "Sweet Angeline" and a version of Dion's "Your Own Back Yard" that are somewhere between tribute and parody.
The remastered CD sounds wonderful. It must be said that the original LP was well recorded too, thanks - originally - to the late Guy Stevens, the mad man with whom they teamed again for this album.
This is a near-perfect record that they could not top without a change of style. And then along came Bowie... | |
