While at Sun Records in the mid-'50s, Carl Perkins made his name with "Blue Suede Shoes." Partly due to some bad timing, though, Perkins was unable to achieve the same level of fame his Sun contemporaries Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis would. But historically speaking, Perkins is just as responsible as those two for the country and blues mix that makes up rock & roll. The proof is heard on this rarities collection, which spotlights his hillbilly roots, Hank Williams-inspired sound, and blues-tinged delivery. A perfect complement to the many hits packages available, Honky Tonk Gal includes solid alternate versions of "Turn Around," "Let the Jukebox Keep on Playing," and "Dixie Fried," as well as stunning covers like "You Can't Make Love to Somebody," "Caldonia," and the title track. A fine record for dedicated fans of classic rock & roll, country, and rockabilly.
