I like the game, the cars, the scenery, the dialogue, the storyline. I haven't a problem with driving the vehicles, though I find it funny that despite braking enough, you tend to swing wildly round corners at speed.

The enemy AI allows them to not even aim directly at you yet you're shot, and how. One shot, regardless of what weapon it may be, renders a serious chunk of your life to the disposals. 100% reduced to 66%, then 35%, then 12%, then dead. If you're lucky. That can happen from one person in the same spot.

Reloading of your own weapon is a pain when in a gunfight as it takes too long, though you are advised, through common sense, to take cover before you do. Yet popping out and hitting an enemy, expecting your 4 or 6 rounds to finish him off once you repetitively hit the R1 button, doesn't always work. I hit one enemy in good range with a shotgun four times before he died, yet from a distance he managed to hit me. From that same distance my shotgun shots counts for zilch.

The ammo available is fine, shoot the enemy and take his gun, but health is very limited, to about one health box per level, if that. OK, complete a level or a section of a level and your health maybe restored. But there are levels where you are in need of health and have already used one box, which can be a boost of either 50% or 100%, and that's it. Considering the enemy's AI is sharper in speed of movement despite the L2/R2 auto-aim, you are caught hard literally in a split-second either around a corner or from an enemy hiding elsewhere where you don't see him. In some cases the enemy comes out from behind and within three shots you're dead before you can turn around, much less have a chance to find and shoot him.

In reviews elsewhere I've only read one person mention how easily you can die from shots from behind. Health is too scarce for where the AI is this sharp. I'm an avid game-player, and enjoy challenges, the harder the better, but where practicality then moves on into bewilderment at being shot so often so quickly from someone who you hardly get to see, with health so scarce, it makes me wonder what the makers of Mafia (PS2) were actually pondering over, in terms of survival, when they made this game.

Put into an area where I have 25% health because two enemies have managed to move faster than I can, faster than the auto-aim and have shot me up some, having to venture further with another five or six enemies to kill, two more hidden with snipers that will finish me with two shots before I can even recognise where they are, I would like to find one or two more health boxes.

So the only thing that spoilt this game is the enemy AI gets away with sharp reflexes and almost split-second shots without needing to actually aim that takes off chunks of health, and health boxes are very scarce. Seven out of ten for this game.</td><td><script type="text/javascript">google_ad_client = "pub-5821412950245701";google_alternate_color = "F5F5FF";google_ad_width = 336;google_ad_height = 280;google_ad_format = "336x280_as";google_ad_type = "text";google_ad_channel = "0725529317";google_color_border = "F5F5FF";google_color_bg = "F5F5FF";google_color_link = "22229C";google_color_text = "000000";google_color_url = "333333";</script><script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></td></tr></table><table cellpadding="15"><tr align="center"><td valign="bottom"><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/52849/mafia_2004_ntsc_retail_dvd/cd"><img src="/image_system/covers_th/6/6/66aff66d5119e83308794598f6737320.jpg" border="0"></a><br><strong><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/52849/mafia_2004_ntsc_retail_dvd/cd">cd</a></strong><br><font size="1">1025 x 1000 px</font></td><td valign="bottom"><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/52849/mafia_2004_ntsc_retail_dvd/front"><img src="/image_system/covers_th/a/f/afca39c379d22f4af146121f3167731d.jpg" border="0"></a><br><strong><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/52849/mafia_2004_ntsc_retail_dvd/front">front</a></strong><br><font size="1">1489 x 1000 px</font></td></tr></table>
