<font size="1">added on February 8, 2007, at 17:24 by elhi</font><br /><br /><table><tr valign="top"><td>This is the first in a new series of Classic Rock endorsed albums that focuses on different genres within the history and rich tapestry of rock music. Across 2 CDs and 27 tracks featuring artists include Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Rush, Marillion, Yes, Spirit, Argent, Caravan, Atomic Rooster, Traffic, Procol Harum, Colosseum, Focus, Curved Air, Rare Bird, Steve Hackett, Renaissance, Family, Van Der Graaf Generator, Barclay James Harvest, The Nice, IQ, Twelfth Night and Blue Oyster Cult (?), this is a spirited attempt to cover a bewildering and wide ranging genre.
Few of the acts dubbed prog had much in common musically, beyond a refusal to constrain themselves to tradtiional forms of song, so any attempt to claim uniformity will inevitably fail. But as a collection of seventies rock this certainly passes muster. Yes, there are some pants tracks - come in "Sweet Dream" by Jethro Tull, "Bedside Manners Are Extra" by Greenslade, the abominable inexcusable Colosseum with those "Those About To Die" and "Hole In My Shoe" by Traffic. There are also some tracks that have nothing to do with any notion of prog - hello Renaissance, Family, Spirit and Blue Oyster Cult, which must have something to do with licensing, and please don't read the sleevenotes by the formerly talented Geoff Barton in which he extols the virtues of acts not on the CD.
Play it, though, and you can forgive a lot. After all it has "Killer" by Van Der Graaf Generator, "Solar Fire" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, "Child Of The Universe" by Barclay James Harvest and my beloved Atomic Rooster - even if it is bloody "Tomorrow Night" - mind you, it could have been "Devils Answer"!. The press release claims it's 'the perfect Father’s Day gift and a dream-come-true for any progressive rock completist.' The first half may be true, the second is nonsense, but this will sell well to the Tesco crowd its aimed at, and is streets above the usual service station compilations - although one such CD called "Rock Chronicles" is the best 99p I ever spent at 2am on the M1.
As well as the above named the treats include Curved Air - "Backstreet Luv", the always welcome Rare Bird and "Sympathy" and a run out for second generation progsters IQ and Twelfth Night. Well worth the tenner you can pick it up for, but don't treat it as a prog rock best of.</td><td><script type="text/javascript">google_ad_client = "pub-5821412950245701";google_alternate_color = "F5F5FF";google_ad_width = 336;google_ad_height = 280;google_ad_format = "336x280_as";google_ad_type = "text";google_ad_channel = "0725529317";google_color_border = "F5F5FF";google_color_bg = "F5F5FF";google_color_link = "22229C";google_color_text = "000000";google_color_url = "333333";</script><script type="text/javascript" src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></td></tr></table><table cellpadding="15"><tr align="center"><td valign="bottom"><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/front"><img src="/image_system/covers_th/4/1/41f35a057f42c79cca972b3e61d8d038.jpg" border="0"></a><br><strong><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/front">front</a></strong><br><font size="1">1046 x 959 px</font></td><td valign="bottom"><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/back"><img src="/image_system/covers_th/2/2/22ddb76adc0c444c4e53a4d33ed07b60.jpg" border="0"></a><br><strong><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/back">back</a></strong><br><font size="1">1799 x 1431 px</font></td><td valign="bottom"><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/cd"><img src="/image_system/covers_th/4/3/43875a51d3d2ef4fa763d9633f9eef4c.jpg" border="0"></a><br><strong><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/cd">cd</a></strong><br><font size="1">972 x 989 px</font></td><td valign="bottom"><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/cd_2"><img src="/image_system/covers_th/f/b/fbabce81e1af49d2965cdf3a1d508dff.jpg" border="0"></a><br><strong><a href="http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/3155/classic_rock_prog_rock_2006_retail_cd/cd_2">cd_2</a></strong><br><font size="1">972 x 976 px</font></td></tr></table>
