OK guys, which make do you prefer? I'm looking at Canon, Epson, Mustek and HP.

Note I'm asking what you prefer, not what you currently have or use!

My old scanner is a Canon N650P. When I built my current PC I overlooked the presence of a parallel port and as a result my scanner is now useless.

I'm currently "borrowing" mother's Canon N1220U which she also can't use. Since upgrading from OS 9.2 on her Mac to OS X it made her scanner useless. It connects via USB but from past experience working for BT Yahoo! I know some motherboard manufacturers have power issues when a device relies on getting its power via USB - mine also has this problem. My scanner fails now and then either forcing me to reboot or log off and back on.

So, what I'm looking for is a new scanner that has its own power supply.

As mentioned earlier, Epson, Mustek, Canon or HP???

Hi Yesideez!

My only recommendation would be to stay away from HP. I had an All-In-One that reapeatedly crapped out on me.

My mom (who has a Mac) has been pretty pleased with her Epson - and if she likes it, that means 0 issues ;-)

I replaced my HP with a networked Brother and am pleased as punch with it.

I always stay away from anything that's all-in-one from bathroom goods (shampoo/conditioner) to anything.

I have never seen how anything that claims to do more than one thing at the same time can be as effective as one product that does one thing.

I prefer Epson.I also recomed getting a refurbished one to save your self some cash.I purchased one for very cheap and nothing wrong with it.You can get these directly from the manufactures web site.Do your homework on the specks first, to find out a good range from quality to cost.

Thanks Ice, I had planned to look into it in more detail once I'd settled with a manufacturer.

My brother's now ex researched her scanner years ago (I think I was using Photoshop 3 at the time - can't believe we're already on version 9) and she ended up buying one I'd never heard of and the quality of the scans were incredible!

Ya im not sure what the difrence is between a Canon N650P and a Canon N650U are, but im pretty sure the quality in scans are about the same.I went from N65OU To a Epson Perfection 3170 Photo and the results were like night and day.My cannon I had to fix up my scans alot. The Epson once you get your custom settings down its a breeze.Minor fixes. Here is a cover I scanned my self with very little adjustments.http://www.allcdcovers.com/show/15689/steve_miller_band_steve_miller_band_greatest_hits_ 1974_78_1997_retail_cd/front

That was scanned using this old Canon N1220U with no editing and my scans on my N650P were far superior in quality.

I've just found out that I can buy a USB to parallel adapter for £30 (UKP) so I'm about to start researching some models :)

Well, I'm back after being away for a few days.

Decided to stop scanning with the old scanner until my new one arrived.

Decided to go for the Epson V100 Photo scanner. Great piece of kit. The number of features is crazy including scanning 35mm negatives, photo slides and more than a few ways to scan documents.

Well worth the money. No more having to preview, adjust the scan area and print as the scan area automatically adjusts to the document size.

I have an HP All-In-One, but it kept eating my booklets, so I picked up a Canon LIDE 70 and I am VERY pleased with the price (under $100) and the performance

The main thing I was looking for in a scanner when I was making my choice was one with its own independent power supply. Too many peripherals malfunction when they draw their power from the USB cable, another problematic peripheral is USB modems - connections dropping etc.

Tested the scanner last night by scanning the Now 50 front cover using the professional scanning method and the end result was far better than anything I've seen. The colors appear so vibrant like the cover itself and not washed out like so many other scanners I've used.

Did you just upload some scans from the new scanner?

Yesideez

Yes, why? Are they OK?

Wanted to upload a couple first to make sure - will start uploading again when they're confirmed :)

heh I can't scan and upload them again as I've given them all away :D

I've got far too many CDs and DVDs lying around here so I'm having to rip them all and get rid of them!
